COMPETITIVENESS EXAMINATION QUESTIONS-EXERCISES FOR PRACTICE -3

A sentence with a transitive verb has two voices -- Active Voice and Passive Voice.  Both Active and Passive forms of voice are used while writing and speaking.

 In Active voice the sentence describes about Subject as doer of action whereas in Passive  voice the subject is described as receiver of action. 

For example:

The girl plucks flowers. ...........1

This sentence in active form tells about the girl doing an activity.

But the same sentence in Passive Voice -

Flowers are plucked by the girl. .........2

describes about flowers and Subject the girl shifts to a secondary position as a receiver of the activity.

A verb is said to be in the Active Voice when the person or the thing denoted by Subject acts or is active.  The verb 'plucked' in the sentence 1 written above is active. 

A verb is said to be in the Passive Voice when the person or the thing denoted by Subject does not act or is inactive but receives the action done by someone or something. So the verb ' was plucked' in the sentence 2 written above is passive. 

An intransitive verb is not used in the Passive Voice unless it takes a Cognate Verb in its Active form. 

For example : 

He slept a sound sleep.

A sound sleep was slept by him.

The Passive Form of Voice is used when the Subject in its Active Voice is vague, unknown or unimportant like People, they Someone or somebody etc.

 For example:

Someone stole her purse.

Her purse was stolen.

They sent goods free of charges.

Goods were sent free of charges. etc.

While forming Passive Voice of a sentence following changes are made :

Simple Present :  is, am, are + Past Participle

Simple Past : Was, were + Past Participle

Present Perfect : Has, Have Been +Past Participle

Past Perfect : Had Been + Past Participle

Present Continuous : Is, am, are being + Past Participle

Past Continuous :  Was, were being + Past Participle

Future Tense : Shall, will be + past Participle

While changing Active Voice into Passive Voice, Object in active voice is made subject in the Passive Voice.

In Competitive Examinations, questions relating to Voice are of different types. Generally, there are those with options given against a sentence and the correct option is to be chosen and marked. 

Steps for attempting Questions with given options 

• In a question with the given options one has to go by the options provided in the question and has to select the most appropriate out of those. 
• In voice, active or passive form is changed of the verb used in the sentence without any change in tense.
• In no case tense of the sentence is to be changed. Tense must remain the same under all circumstances.
• First of all identify of Tense of the Sentence.
• Mark the Main and Helping Verbs in the sentence.
• Find out if there is any verb used as Gerund, infinitive or participle etc. in the sentence. These need to be treated in a separate way while making a change.
• Change the voice of the main verb with its subject and object of the sentence according to the rules of voice.
• Now find out the nearest appropriate sentence in the given options.

1. Sentences starting with People or they say are changed like 'It is said..' But sometimes it is also changed with object of the sentence like-

A man's friends are believed to be the index of his character.

2. This sentence is in present tense and in interrogative form. Follows will change into is followed by. To make interrogative form, is will precede winter. So it will be 

Which season is winter followed by?

3. In this sentence the part ...will spring not follow it? is to be changed.

It will be

....will it not be followed by spring?

4. This sentence is in past tense and in passive voice.

A subject is required. So parents is an appropriate choice.

First option is incorrect because it gives impression of her lying under the table.

1. In this sentence we is subject, expected is verb and her is object. The other verb in the sentence is 'to return'. It cannot be changed into passive form because a person himself is to return and not a thing or commodity is to be returned. So it will be...

She was expected by us ...the remaining sentence will be added as it is.

2. This sentence gives impression of imperative sentence but here 'get' is a causative verb. For that a subject is to be added in the sentence. This sentence is in passive form and its active form will be Get someone to stitch your coat.

3. In this sentence first part is in active form and the second part is in passive form. So first part is to be changed into passive and the second into active form. These two conditions are fulfilled in option no. 2

4. This sentence is in active form. In passive voice for negative purpose  the word 'any' is not used. But in its place 'No' is used. So option 3 is correct.

5. In this sentence, the part ' the poet.....wrote many satirical poems.' is in active form. The other part 'who was born in a poor family' is in passive form. The sentence after change will be.....

Many satirical poems were written by the poet who took birth in a poor family.

Active and Passive forms of voice are used while writing and speaking according to the emphasis to be accorded to a particular part of the sentence. If role of subject is more important Active form of voice is used in the sentence. But to put more emphasis on the activity passive form of voice is used. 

For example

The teacher punished the students. 

In this sentence the subject 'the teacher' is being emphasized.

But in the following sentence

The students were punished for the mischief.

The students are more emphasized.

Questions of Voice are given in different forms in the competitive examination these days. Sometimes there are questions of error spotting relating to change of voice in the given sentences. 

There are also options given against a sentence and the correct option is to be chosen and marked.

ANSWERS

1. The juggler showed tricks that thrilled children.

This sentence is in active voice as its main verb 'showed' is first form of verb. It is to be changed into passive voice.

In this sentence main verb is 'showed'. The juggler, subject and tricks is object. According to rules its verb after change should be 'was/were  shown. The second verb 'thrilled' in the sentence relates to 'tricks' as 'that' describes the noun 'tricks'.

Now check the given options.

First option describes 'Tricks ...... thrill children. This sentence is in present Indefinite tense and it is in active voice. It is incorrect.

Second option has '.......had thrilled'  Past Perfect tense. As tense is changed  the option is incorrect.

fourth option shows that juggler thrilled the children whereas the tricks thrilled children. So this option is incorrect. 

In Third option, the verb 'thrilled' is changed into 'were thrilled' and 'showed' into 'shown'. The part '...tricks thrilled children' is changed as ' 'children were thrilled by tricks', Juggler showed tricks is changed into 'tricks shown by the juggler.' This is the correct option.

 2. Who knows her in this city?

In this sentence 'knows' is main form and it is first form of verb. So the sentence is in active voice. It is to be changed into passive voice. 'Knows' in passive voice will be 'is/are known'. It takes preposition 'to' instead of 'by' with it. 'Who' is in subject case and in object case it is 'whom'. In passive voice in object case it is 'To whom' and in Subject case it is 'who'. 

In passive voice this sentence has following two forms.

-- To whom is she known in this city?

-- Who is she known to in this city?

So the option 3 is the correct answer.

3. I expected him to clear the examination.

In this sentence 'I' is subject 'him' object and 'expected' is verb. 'Expected' is first form of verb in Past Indefinite Tense. It is in active form of voice. It is to be changed into passive voice.

'Expected' will change into 'was expected'.

Options 1,2 and 4 are in Present Tense so both are incorrect. Option 3 is the correct answer. 

4. I caught her stealing my books.

In this sentence 'I' is subject, 'her' object, 'caught' main verb and 'stealing' is participle. The main verb 'caught' is second form of verb catch and the sentence is in Past Indefinite tense. It is in active form and is to be changed into passive voice. The verb 'caught' after change  will be 'was caught'. Option 2  says ..my book.. was caught and option 3 ... I caught my book both are incorrect. Option 4 says .....stealing my book by me which does not fit well. Option 1 is correct She was caught ... while stealing.

 

5.  You need not take this medicine now.

Need is used both as main verb and modal verb. Here it is acting as a modal verb. Main verb is take in Present Indefinite tense. This sentence is in active form to be changed into passive voice. You is subject and this medicine is object in this sentence. The verb 'take' in passive voice will be 'be taken'. 

In options 4 and 5 modals should and may are incorrect. In option 2 need taken is incorrect because in passive voice with modal verb 'be and third form of verb' is used. So option 1 is the correct answer.

Question - Out of the given options select the correct form of the following sentence after change of voice.

1. She does not conceal anything from me.

Options:

1. Anything is not concealed from me by her.

2. Nothing is concealed from me by her.

3. Nothing has concealed from me by her.

2. She gave the beggar food to eat.

Options:

1. The beggar was given food by her to be eaten.

1. In active voice, not and anything is used. But in passive voice, instead of not and anything, nothing is used.

2. In this sentence, the point to be noted is that for food ' to be eaten is used' and for beggar, 'to eat ' is to be used.

3. In this sentence, I is subject, saw verb and her is object. Nagging is participle (a verb used as a present participle) and her husband object to participle. Here both objects ' her' and ' her husband' can be used. If saw is used it will be ' was seen'  and if nagging is used it will be 'being nagged'.

4. They say or People say changes into ' it is said'. Sometimes main sentence is also used for passive voice. In main sentence, 'nobody' is subject, 'her problem,' object, 'understands' verb in Present Indefinite Tense. Understands will change into ' is understood' and 'say' into 'is said'.

5. This sentence is in passive voice. Here subject is required. In such cases a vague subject like someone or somebody is used. ' was recommended' will be 'recommended' and 'he' into 'him'.

Both Active and Passive forms of sentences are used while writing and speaking. A particular form is used to show emphasis on certain part of the sentence. Active form is used if the role of the subject is to be emphasized and passive voice is used to show importance of the activity or the object.

In competitive examinations different types of questions are given to assess knowledge about the topic. In certain questions numbered options are given as answer of a sentence voice of which is  to be changed and the correct option is required to be selected out of the given options.  

For example :

Question - Choose the most appropriate option to change the voice ( Active Passive ) form of the given sentence. 

I appreciate the way he welcomed us.

OPTIONS

a) I appreciate the way we are welcomed by him.

b) I appreciate the way by which he welcomed us.

c) The way he welcomed us was appreciated by me.

d) I appreciate the way we were welcomed by him.

SOLUTION

This sentence is in active form is  to be changed into passive voice.In the first part of this sentence, 'I' is subject and 'appreciate' is verb in present indefinite tense. In the latter part, 'he' is subject, 'welcomed' is verb in past indefinite tense. 'Us is object.

To change this sentence into passive - 

'Appreciate' will change into 'is appreciated'. 'I' into 'by me'.
'Is appreciated by me'.

'Us' will change into 'we'.
'Welcomed' will change into 'were welcomed'.
'He' will change into 'by him'.
'the way we were welcomed by him'.

But the answer is to be selected out of the given options only. The nearest correct option will be selected as answer.

NOTE : IN NO CASE TENSE IS CHANGED WHILE CHANGING THE VOICE. THE SENTENCE CONTINUES TO REMAIN IN THE SAME TENSE.




1. In the first option, 'I appreciate' is in the same tense but 'are welcomed' is in present tense whereas in the sentence 'welcomed' is in the past tense. This option is not correct.
2. In passive voice, with helping verb like 'is, am, are, was, or were' etc. third form of verb is used. But in this sentence, 'I appreciate' and 'he welcomed us' are in the same active voice. This option is also not correct.
3. In this option, ' I appreciate' is changed into 'was appreciated by me'. In this way the tense is changed to past tense. It is not correct.
4. 'I appreciate the way' is in the same form but 'he welcomed us' is changed to 'we were welcomed by him'. It is in passive form and the sentence is in the same tense. This is the nearest correct option as answer.

3. People say that he cheated the old lady.

a) He cheated the old lady is said by people.
b) It is said that he cheated the old lady.
c) The old lady is said to be cheated by people.
d) People say the old lady is cheated.



4. Time demands he should hold the reins.

OPTIONS
a) He was demanded to hold the reins.
b) It is demanded he should hold the reins.
c) It is demanded the reins should be held.
d) Time demands him holding the reins.



5. Someone has stolen my bag in the market.

OPTIONS
a) My bag was stolen in the market by someone.
b) My bag had been stolen in the market. 
c) Someone stole my bag in the market.
d) My bag has been stolen in the market.

EXERCISE - ONE

1. This sentence, in active voice, is required to be changed into passive voice. According to  grammar rules  following changes are required.

' She' - Subject case - 'by her'.

'expected' - 'was expected'.

'me' - 'I '.

'her' - object case - 'She'

'to help' - 'to be helped'.

Keeping the above points in mind, answer is to be selected out of the given options 

This is the easiest sentence because in all the options except one, 'is expected' is used. Present tense is used. In voice tense is not changed. So the last option with 'was expected', the nearest appropriate option is the answer.



2. This sentence is in active voice. 'Circumstances' is subject. Such a subject is considered a vague subject. 'Forced' is verb and 'him' is object. According to grammar rules it should change as under:

'Forced' verb in past tense - 'was forced'.
'Him' - He 
'to resign' - to be resigned. Grammatically this change is correct but this change does not make any sense or meaning. So it is not required.
'Circumstances' - 'by circumstances'. This subject,mostly avoided is dropped in passive voice.

According to the above changes, it should be -
He was forced to resign.

In option a) 'circumstances were forced' is incorrect because circumstances were not forced or nobody forced circumstances. In option b) the words 'to resign' are placed wrongly. In option d) verb 'forced' is in active voice. So this cannot be passive voice. Option 'c' is the correct answer.


NOTE - WORDS IN SUBJECT CASE LIKE PEOPLE, SOMEBODY, SOMEONE, THEY, PROVIDENCE ETC. USED IN ACTIVE VOICE ARE AVOIDED IN PASSIVE VOICE. 


3. This sentence is in active voice. People is a vague subject in this sentence. It is not generally used in passive voice. Changes in passive voice will be as follow:

'Say' - 'is said'.
'Cheated' - verb in past tense. - 'was cheated'.
'The old lady' will have no change.
'He' - 'by him'
Such sentences start with the word 'it'.

The words like 'is said by people' in a) and 'is said to be' do not make any sense or meaning in the context of the sentence.
Option b) is the correct answer.

NOTE - THE WORD 'NEED' IS USED BOTH AS A MODAL VERB AS WELL AS A MAIN VERB. 

For example - 

I need a pen. (main verb) 

You need not worry. (modal verb)

4. This sentence is in active voice. 'You' is subject, 'need' a modal verb, 'remind' main verb and 'me' is an object.'Need not remind' is negative verb in present tense.

Changes will be -

'You' - 'by you'

'Need not remind' - 'Need not be reminded'.

'Me' - 'I'.

a) In making passive voice modal verb is not changed. So needed is incorrect. 

b),c)  Similarly in these options should is incorrect.

d) This option is the correct answer.

5. This sentence due to its verb 'has stolen' appears to be in passive voice but this sentence in Present Perfect Tense is in active voice.

 'Someone' - Subject  (a vague subject)

'Has stolen' - verb in Present tense.

'My bag' - object.

Changes will be -

'Someone' - 'by someone'.

'Has stolen' - 'has been stolen'.

'My bag'  will not change.

Options a), b), c) are in past tense so these are incorrect. Someone has been dropped in passive voice. Option d) is correct answer.

NOTE -  IN CASE OF A PHRASAL VERB ITS PTEPOSITION SHOULD NOT BE CHANGED, SHIFTED OR DROPPED

For example : 
Boys laughed at the beggar.
The beggar was laughed at by boys.

1. This sentence is in active voice and in present tense.In this sentence-
They -Subject  Expect - Verb in Present Indefinite Tense.
Him- Object. The changes will be as under :

They - 'by them.'
Expect - 'is expected'.
Him - 'He'.
To arrive - 'to be arrived'. But this does not make any sense.

a) 'They are expected' is wrong because 'they expect' and
     'he is expected'. 
b) 'They expect' is in active voice. It is not correct.
c) There is 'should' in this option which conveys wrong meaning.
d) 'He is expected' is the correct passive voice. In this sentence subject has been dropped. This is the nearest correct answer.



2. This sentence is in present tense and in active voice. 
Women - Subject
Like - verb in present tense.
Men - Object.
The changes will be -
'Women' - by women.
'Like' - to be liked.
'Men' will  not change.
Men are liked by women to flatter them.

a) This sentence gives impression of 'men to be flattered' which is wrong according to the original sentence.
c) 'Women like men' is active voice, so this is incorrect.
d)'Active voice 'Women like' will not change into women are liked. This is also incorrect.
b) Men are liked .... is the correct answer.



3. This sentence is in past tense and in active voice. 
In this sentence 

She - Subject

EXERCISES FOR PRACTICE

While writing we use different forms of sentences( i.e Active and Passive forms). Words are used in a sentence according to the emphasis to accorded to them. Words to be emphasised are written in first place and words of less importance are placed in  secondary position in the sentence. 

For example

Someone has picked my pocket in the crowd.

The point to be emphasized in this sentence is  'my pocket has been picked' and not by whom. Here we can drop the subject and write this sentence in passive voice as follows. 

My pocket has been picked in the crowd.

The two forms of sentences i.e. Active and Passive forms are changed from one to other. The process of changing from Active to Passive form of a sentence is called 'Change of the Voice'.

 In a sentence, there are Subject, Verb and Object. But some sentences are without an object. For a change of voice an object in a sentence is necessary..
