A long time ago, an honest king ruled over a small kingdom named Bijanagar. Every day, the king would listen to the complaints of his people and try to solve their problems in the best possible way.One day a soldier came running into the king's court. 'I have an alarming piece of news, My Lord !' cried out the soldier. 'My wife told me that there is some evil in our kingdom. Crops have been ruined  and wells have been poisoned!'   When the minister heard this, he instantly walked upto the king and said,"I guess some enemy is trying to create panic in our kingdom, so that our attention gets diverted to solving our internal problems. And then the enemy will take advantage of our inner disturbances and attack us." said the minister.
You seem to be right! nodded the king. 'What shall we do then?' The minister said, 'In my opinion we should not let our people know that we suspect our enemy. It may give rise to contempt. Instead, we should distribute food and water among our people and  tell them that  the crops might have been damaged because of disease. Meanwhile, I will disguise myself as an old man and try to find out the truth.' The king agreed. That evening, the minister disguised himself as a poor old man and came out of the palace stealthily.
The Minister went to a farmer's house and called out,'Food! Please give me food!' The farmer came out with two pieces of  bread in his hand and said ,'This is all that I have, O old man!' "You seem to be in trouble," said the old man. 'Yes, someone has been very cruel. They have stamped and ruined my crops,' said the farmer."But I heard the crops were ruined because of  a disease."said the old  man.'No, that's not true!' the farmer interrupted. " The royal guards are the culprits. They have stamped our crops and poisoned our wells." 'How can you be so sure? asked the old man. 'I heard it from some people at the inn nearby', replied the farmer.
The old man thanked  the farmer for the food and left. He then went to the inn nearby. He saw some people gathered near a table, discussing their ruined crops and wells. among them were two young men talking loudly. "Our king didn't punish his royal guards for this wicked deed. Instead, he is trying to cover up by providing food to us!'said one of them. 'Yes, our king isn't honest any more. He has lost his goodwill!' backed up the other. Everyone standing there nodded in agreement. After a while the two young men prepared to leave.  the minister disguised as the old man was watching them. He started following the two young men. When they came out of the inn, one of the young man said, "We have provoked theses people against their king. We must  continue the same way. Within a  couple of days, the angry citizens will revolt against ruler. Then we should inform our king."  'and that would be the most appropriate moment to attack ' laughed the other gentleman.
The Minister heard it all.  He hid behind a tree. The two young men went inside a small hut. The Minister came back to the  palace and informed the king about the wicked plan of  the other kingdom. Instantly the soldiers rode to the small hut where the two men were staying and captured them. The next morning, the culprits were brought out in the palace for their evil plan and were punished for their deeds.

ANSWERS : (101-105)

The sentences are about a donkey and treatment given to it by its master. The starting sentences of A and B suggest that these cannot form the beginning of the passage.  The words 'to belabour it' in the sentence C and a dialogue of E also tell that these  should not form the first sentence. The sentence F gives impression that there was some action prior to this. So D can be the first sentence followed by C and B . Sentences E & F are a little confusing but by reading these it is quite clear that F and E are fourth and fifth sentences.the last sentence is A. so answer is 101. (c) 102(e) 103(d) 104(e) 105(a)

Direction  ( 11 - 20)  :  Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it. Certain words/phrases are given in  bold to help you locate them while answering some of the questions.

Over the past few days alone, the China's  Central bank has pumped extra cash into the financial system and cut interest rates. The aim is to free more cash for banks to lend and provide a boost for banks seeking to improve the return on their assets. The official data though suggested that bad loans make up only 1.4%  of their balance sheets. How to explain the discrepancy ? One possible answer is that bad loans are lagging indicator i.e. it is only after the economy struggled for a while that borrowers began to suffer. Looked at this way, China is trying to anticipate problems keeping its banks in good health by sustaining economic growth of nearly 7% year-on-year.
Another more worrying possibility is that bad loans are worse than official data indicate. This does not look to be the cause for China's biggest banks, which are managed conservatively and largely focus on the country's biggest value and quality borrowers. But there is mounting evidence that when it comes to smaller  banks, especially those yet to list on the stock market, bad loans piling up. That is important because unlisted lenders account for just over a third of the Chinese banking sector, making them as big as Japan's entire banking industry.
Although, non - performing loans have edged up slowly, the increase in special -mention loans (a category that includes those overdue but not yet classified as impaired loans) has been much bigger. Special mention loans are about 2% at most of China's big listed banks, suggesting that such loans must be much higher at their smaller, unlisted peers.  Many of these loans are simple bad  debts which banks have not yet admitted to. Another troubling fact is that fifteen years ago, the government created asset management companies (often referred to as bad banks ) to take on the non-performing loans of the lenders. after the initial transfer these companies had little to pay. But, last year, Cinda, the biggest of the bad banks, bought nearly 150 billion Yuan ( $ 24 billion) of distressed assets last year, two thirds more than 2013.
These assets would have raised the banks bad-loans ratio by a few tenths  of a percentage point. Although such numbers do not seem very alarming, experts who reviewed last year's results for 158 banks of which only 20 listed  found that'shadow loans', loans recorded as investments which may be a disguise for bad loans have grown to as much as 5-7 billion Yuan, or 5% of the industry's assets. These are heavily concentrated on the balance sheets bof smaller unlisted banks, and at the very least, all this points to  a need for recapitalisation of small banks.

IBPS PO Preliminary Examination Question Paper (Based on an examinee's memory) held on October 10, 2015 duly solved with explanations .

Directions : (1 - 10 )   : Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions. certain words and phrases are given in bold to help you locate them while answering some of the questions.

Inequality is at the top of the agenda around the world. Hilary Clinton, the leading Democratic candidate to succeed Barack Obama as President of the United States, made inequality the centrepiece of a major  campaign speech.
Economics at the IMF too have recently released a study assessing the causes and consequences of rising inequality.  Its authors reckon that while inequality could cause all sorts of problems, governments should be especiallly concerned about its effects on growth. They estimate that a one percent point increase in the income share of the top 20% will drag down growth by 0.08% percentage points over five years , while a rise in the income share of the bottom 20% actually boosts growth. But how does inequality affect economic growth rates? Economists say that some inequality is needed to propel  growth.Without the carrot  of large financial rewards, risky entrepreneurship and innovation would grind to a halt.In 1975, an economist, argued that societies cannot have both perfect equality and perfect efficiency, but must choose how much one to sacrifice for the other. while most economists continue to hold that view, the recent rise in inequality has prompted a new look at its economic costs. Inequality could impair growth if those with low incomes suffer poor health and low productivity as a  result, or if, as evidence suggests, the poor struggle to finance investments in education, inequality could also threaten public confidence in growth-boosting capitalist strategies like free trade.
More recent work suggests that inequality could lead to economic or financial instability. the governor of the reserve Bank of India argued that governments often respond to inequality by easing the flow of credit to poorer households, however, American households borrowed heavily prior to the crisis to prop up their consumption. But for this rise in household debt, consumption would have stagnated as a result of poor wage  growth. Crafting a response to rising inequality is therefore tricky, he says. some of the  negative impact of  inequality on growth can be blamed on poor government policies in highly unequal countries. In Latin america, for instance,  populist pressure for excessive state economic control seems to shorten the average duration of growth spells. Yet in moderation, redistribution seems to benign effects perhaps by reducing dependence on risky borrowing among poorer households. Over the past generation or two inequality has risen most in places where progressive policies, such as high top tax- rates, have been weakened a little more redistribution now might improve the quality  and quantity of economic growth and reduce the demand for more aggressive state interventions later.

English Comprehension

Directions  (91- 100 )   : Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions. Certain words/phrases are given in bold to help you locate them while answering some of the questions.

Brazil does not look like an economy the verge of over heading. The IMF expects it to shrink by 3% this year, and 1% next. (The country has not suffered two straight years of contractions since 1930-31), 1.2m jobs vanished in September, unemployment has reached 7.6 % up from 4.9% a year ago. Those still in work are finding it harder to make ends  meet real (i.e. adjusted for inflation) wages are down 4.3% year-on-year. Despite the weak economy, inflation is nudging double digits. The Central Bank recently conceded  that it will miss its 4.5%  inflation target next year. Markets don't expect it to be met before 2019. If fast-rising prices  are simply a passing effect of the Brazilian real  (R$) recent fall, which has pushed up the cost of imported goods, the they are not too troubling.  But some economists have a more alarming explanation that Brazil's budgetary woes are so extreme that they have undermined the Central Bank's power to fight inflation- a phenomenon known as fiscal dominance.
The immediate cause of Brazil's troubles are external: the weak world economy, and China's faltering appetite for oil and iron ore in particular, have enfeebled both exports and investment. But much of the country's pain is self-inflicted. The President could have used the commodity windfall from the first term in 2011-14 to trim the bloated state, which swallows 36% of GDP in taxes despite offering few decent public services in return. Instead handouts, subsidised  loans and costly tax breaks for favoured industries were splurged on. Those fuelled a consumption boom, and with it inflation, while hiding the economy's underlying weaknesses: thick red take, indispensable taxes, an unskilled workforce and shoddy infrastructure. The government's profligacy  also left the public finances in tatters. The primary balance (before interest payments) went from a surplus of 3.1% of GDP in 2011 to a forecast deficit of 0.9%  this year. In the same period public debt has swollen to 65% of GDP, an increase of 13 percentage points. That is lower than in many rich countries, but Brazil pays much higher interest on its ddebt. It will spend 8.5% GDP this year swevicing it, more than any other big country. In September it lost its investment-grade credit rating.
Stagflation pf the sort Brazil is experiencing presents central bankers with dilemma. raising interest rates  to quell inflation might push the economy deeper into recession; lowering them to foster growth might send inflation spiralling  out of control, Between October last year and July this year, the country's rate-setters seemed to prioritise price stability, raising the benchmark Selic rate by three percentage points, to 14.25% where it remains, The alluring real rates of almost 5%  ought to have made the Brazilian Real attractive to investors. Instead the currency has weakened and rising inflation despite higher interest rates, combined with a doubling of debt-servicing costs in  the past three  years has led to the diagnosis of fiscal dominance. The cost of servicing Brazil's debt has become so high, that rates have to be set to keep it manageable rather than to rein in prices. That, in turn, leads a vicious circle of a falling currency and rising inflation. There is no question, however, that Brazilian monetary policy is at best hobbled. State-owned banks have extended nearly half the country's credit at low, subdisidised rates that bear little relation to the selic- at a cost of more than 40 billion R$ ($10 billion) a year to the tax payer. As private banks have cut lending in the past year, public ones have continued to expand their loan books.  All this hampers money policy and if left unchecked, this spurt of lending may itself threaten price stability.

Generally there are Subject, Verb and Object.  In a sentence, there are Noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction and prepositions etc. First identify all these and further what out of these is missing in the given sentence. Then how each part is related to the other part of speech. Identify the correct combination i.e proper choice of an adjective with a  noun and an adverb with a verb.A singular verb is used with a singular noun or pronoun. A plural part of speech should match with other plural  part in the sentence. Proper placement of these parts in the sentence is also necessary. For example an adjective or an adverb should be in proximity with the noun or verb that it qualifies. Similarly proper prepositions and conjunctions should be used. Formation of a sentence, whether it is in assertive or interrogative form too should be taken care of. Idioms and phrases in their complete form should be used at the appropriate place in the sentence. As choice is to be made out of given options, all the given words are considered and inapplicable are omitted to choose the correct one.

115(4) The words absent, want and desolate do not  fit properly in the sentence. Out of the                   remaining two 'lamenting' does not give a meaning according the passage. 'deserving'              is the appropriate choice.
116 (2) Here a verb suitable with words '........to accept and explain' is required. Out of given                words .....'makes' us to                     accept and explain is the correct word.
117 (2)  words  'a slow and perennial...' suggest that 'causes' is incorrect ( a is singular,                         'causes' is plural). Similarly wisdom and account are also not suitable                                           words. Out of 'method' and 'endeavour', 'endeavour' is the correct word . Its meaning                is to try or to make an attempt.
118 (5)  Here a verb is required. So current is incorrect. Out of the remaining tackling is the                 appropriate word.
119 (3) Here a verb suitable with noun 'success'  is required. Words arrest, station and figure             do not make a sense in the sentence. Out of the remaining two 'equal' is the                                 correct word according to the meaning of  the sentence.
120 (2)  The words like 'although','technically' and 'as' do not fit here according to sentence                 formation. By the mid-nineteenth century, the educated Indian had become sufficiently aware of both his rich historical heritage and the abject state of his current existence, Nostalgia and a sense of racial identity grew as Indians gradually perceived the oppressiveness of alien rule. In the early nineteenth century, Orientalist scholars associated with the Fort William college, Kolkata helped considerably to unearth several obscure Indian texts and traditions, thereby also creating a new awareness and sensitivity among Indians about their cultural heritage.

In the first half of the nineteenth century, particular in some parts of the country, patriotism was not grossly inconsistent with an undisguised support for the continuation of British rule. Writers of this period from this part of the country made repeated references to how the British had 'rescued' India from many centuries of 'tyrannical' and 'unprogressive' governance  of earlier rulers. Many people of this time, in fact, made an important distinction between the pragmatic gains to be made from a short-term tutelage under British rule and a long-term objective of securing independence from it.Through such thoughts ultimately proved to be naive  and over-optimistic. In the 1820s and 1830s, the advantages of British rule seemed to outweigh its disadvantages. In a letter written in 1823 to Governor General Lord Amherst, an Indian social reformer Raja  Rammohan Roy (1774-1833) opposed an official move to open a Sanskrit college on the ground that it would produce no positive or progressive influence on the educated Hindu. He felt rather than indulge in abstract metaphysical speculation as was likely to be the result of a purely Sanskritik education, Indians would profit far more by imbibing the  best of modern European civilization -- pragmatism and a rational, scientific outlook. Social  usefuleness more than anything else was now to be the true measure of things. In fact, his emphasis on rationality and a commonsense approach to religion led some of his friends and admirers to call him a 'religious utilitarian'.
